Bong-Ra Vs King Cannibal

KING CANNIBAL POSTS…

Don’t forget kids… My ‘All Of The Colours Of The Night’ EP is now out digitally. Vinyl should be hitting shelves very very shortly.

King Cannibal – All The Colours Of The Night EP

KING CANNIBAL SAYS…

If you head over to Ad Noiseam you can preview and pre-order tracks from my forthcoming E.P – Al The Colours Of The Night.

Get your business face on with a slice of the official info below – more of which can be found at http://www.adnoiseam.net/adn140. The Machine Code remix of Dirt (Mary Anne Hobb’s set opener for her recent U.S tour, Sonar & Boiler Room shows) is the first part of a remix swap between Dead Rodell, Current Value & Myself, the second part being my remix of User Error which is featured on CD2 of the Machine Code album.

 by krumble the Discobreaker

“The night has roared, and now has many colours and shades on King Cannibal’s most varied record to date. From this established producer’s insidious remix of Bong-Ra’s “Come Out To Play” or Machine Code’s anthemic and furious version of “Dirt” to the more laid back and melodic remixes by Krumble and Dead Fader, this EP is an accurate snapshot of what King Cannibal is about: not only can he pack a dancefloor, but he also delivers gentle tunes or impressive beatwork. King Cannibal has a posse, an untamed, diverse one.(get this on 12″ / as digital files)”

Ghetto know

KING CANNIBAL SAYS…

Get to know Ghettozoid, producer of my favourite 140 track at the moment ‘Boy Toy’ out on One4Ho which she co-runs with Mai Harper. A wet dream of rhythm that effortlessly injects an overbearing, moody tension (taking it’s cue from Dj Funk via Miss Kittin & Chicks On Speed ) into a dubstep framework. It’s about time we had something to counter the amount of ‘brostep’ that the dubstep scene has been drowning in recently. Hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of Ghettozoid around these parts including some work from her on the next King Cannibal album.

Free Download : Ninja Tune XX Edits

After the release of the Way Of The Ninja mix late last year i was asked to put together some extended standalone edits of a couple highlights to send out to radio. Too good to waste the lovely people at Big Up Magazine (hey what happened to that really long interview i did when i was in SF about this time last year? ) are offering downloads of the two tracks below.

Remixes update… Scorn and Robot Koch

KING CANNIBAL SAYS..

A little update on other releases aside of The Way Of The Ninja.

Scorn – Super Mantis (King Cannibal Remix) : Combat Recordings 12″ & Digital Download out now.

Constructed in my pre-Ninja Tune days (checking the original file name it was labelled ‘ZILLA’ remix – which must make this the last thing i did still using that name. It was an honour to tackle the proto bass music pioneer.
V/A – Friends Of Friends Volume 3 (FoF) : 12″ & Digital Download out now.
Including Robot Koch Ft Jahcoozi – Overnight (King Cannibal Remix)

L.A. based Friends Of Friends releases the third of its on-going split release series. Jahcoozi’s Robot Koch and Mexicans With Guns are the two artists heading up this volume.
King Cannibal & Sasha Perera hook up once again!

Coincidentally much like my work on our first hook up, this one fell after a trip to Berlin, hooking up with Jahcoozi’s gifted front woman Sasha Perera and a night out at the Berghain (which this time i was lucky enough to be playing at).  So much like ‘Murder Us’ this continues the dark house/techno sound, this time a little looser and a lot more closer and darker in feel. Please note that this remix is only on the digital package. Other remixes on the release come care of Alex B, Free the Robots, Mux Mool, Salva and Lunice.
Look out for forthcoming remixes of Machine Code, Memory 9 and more…

Ninja Tune XX presents… King Cannibal – The Way Of The Ninja

KING CANNIBAL SAYS…

My new mix, a retrospective of 20 years of all things Ninja Tune is released November 16th, but for those of you with Ninja XX boxset (pictured below) it can be downloaded right NOW using the codes provided in your packaging. I’m very happy to hear all the feedback on it has been more than positive so far, as this approach to mixing isn’t to everyones taste.

“This mix was constructed on planes, trains, hotel rooms and in the studio throughout the months May, June, July using vinyl, CDs, Wavs and a DAT in Ableton Live and Logic.

A suitably diverse number of locations, formats and tools for a diverse label like Ninja Tune. A label that spans two thirds of my life, from putting DJ Vadim records on my christmas list (Santa decided to go with Dr Octagon – Instrumentalyst instead) to being turned away from a sold-out show to celebrate the tenth Ninja birthday, i’ve truly grown up to the sounds of this label’s catalogue.

Ninja’s history being so entwined with my own only makes a project like this harder. An ignorant person may not feel guilty about leaving out something from Bogus Order’s Zen Breaks whose record was used for the static sound of needle hitting vinyl that appears a few times in this mix or for leaving out Drome. That problem is then compounded by the next – everyone knows the classics – Timber, Witness, Dark Lady… they’ve been on countless mixes before, but they need to be in here.. perhaps.. perhaps…. perhaps the way out is to get creative with these, to put a new spin on them. Ninja has a rich tradition of getting creative behind the turntables, from Coldcut’s groundbreaking ‘ 70 Minutes Of Madness’ Journeys By DJ mix to the diverse Solid Steel series, so why not try and up the ante a little?

So three months and a little over 250 tracks later I arrive at 74 minutes of music mixed, blended, sliced, diced, torn up and finally rendered to audio. A lot of classics, personal favourites, some slept on and a few exclusive acapellas and instrumentals care of the Ninja family. Sure there are some classics left off – The Crow immediately springs to mind, but as it stands this is The Way Of The Ninja’, not only a Ninja Tune retrospective but the sound of my last 20 years.”

KING CANNIBAL SHARES…
King Cannibal – Blackout by King Cannibal 3

Seems like its been a long time since anything with the name King Cannibal hit the shelves doesn’t it? Well there is a big stack of things lined up for the second half of this year including remixes for Robot Koch, Scorn, Machine Code and Amon Tobin, new material on the Ninja XX compilation (The Grind & Crawl) which some of you may recognise from my gigs this year and i’m talking to Ad Noiseam about an E.P of material for them. That is all still just on the horizon though, and what material has been out is featured on the X box title Crackdown 2 (further work on computer games is forthcoming too) so to bridge the gap feel free to grab this little reworking of Todd Terry’s drum & bass track Blackout. inspired by an old One In The Jungle mix (Or was it a Kiss mix?) by Ed Rush that used the Blackout speech, which i’d never heard before. Its quite texturally heavy as i’ve really been enjoying building my sprawling dropouts ( i say that now – i’ll regret it when it comes to playing my next material out.)

Friends Of Friends Vol.3

KING CANNIBAL SAYS…

L.A based Friends Of Friends releases a third of its on-going split release series. Jahcoozi’s Robot Koch and Mexicans With Guns are the two artists heading up this volume. I was approached to contribute a remix of Overnight just before my return trip to Low End Theory (and what a night that was) after Jahcoozi’s guest appearance on my track Murder Us. Coincidentally much like my work on our first hook up, this one fell after a trip to Berlin, hooking up with Jahcoozi’s gifted front woman Sasha Perera and a night out at the Berghain (which this time i was lucky enough to be playing at).  So much like Murder Us this continues the dark house / techno sound, this time a little looser  and a lot more intimate in sound. The release is out  October 5th, but you can preview a slice of my remix below followed by the full tracklisting.

Also both myself and mr Robot Koch are appearing  in Birmingham on July 30th, alongside Illum Sphere at Under The Counter.

Crackdown 2

KING CANNIBAL SAYS….

I’m happy to say that my fist slice of video game music is out now! I won’t go in to the specifics of Crackdown 2, the X-Box game itself but the tracklisting is notable indeed. The Bug, El-B, Dan The Automator and plenty more tackle punk & alt classics such as Public Enemy, The Damned, 7 Seconds and The Afflicted. A Full tracklisting can be found HERE. I’ve uploaded a snippet of my first version of the Smash It Up remix,  the final version on the release is v.5 and was boiled down to keep drop outs to a minimum as well as a ton of breaks added. I do still really like this initial version still, hence me wanting people to hear it. Also this sort of thing may shed a little light on the process involved in working in this environment, as i say i completed 5 versions before Microsoft felt like it was 100% correct for the game and scene it features in. I did also attempt a remix of The Afflicted’s ‘Here Come The Cops’ and have to congratulate El-B on being able to work with the source material.   Aragami Style & A Shining Force also feature in game.

KING CANNIBAL SPRAYS…

Its Joe Vs The Volcano part 2 this weekend as i do my best to defy the fate of Pompeii and make it over to Miami (my first time) for Smut & Bass at The Awarehouse to get busy and get filthy. The next morning i’ll be heading over to L.A ahead of my return to Low End Theory at The Airliner on the 28th. anyone who spoke to me or reads my facebook or twitter will no doubt remember me raving about this place upon my return from my last U.S tour. Rightly so too….  when i get back i’ll be hoping from one airport to another in order to catch a flight out to Belfast to play Diston @ The Art College. Come join me why don’t you, i promise to bite.

KING CANNIBAL SAYS…

As you may have noticed, i’ve been a bit slack with the blog recently. Could this be that i’m working on the next album, and that it also happens to be Ninja’s 20th birthday this year and i’m working on projects for that? Possibly. Possibly.

There is always time for record shopping though, and here is what i’ve been enjoying recently.

Dausteg: Animism Vs A.I (Live in Riga 19/2/10)

Spykidelic Writes:

On February 19th 2010, Dausteg (Tony F Wilson and Are Mokkelbost) traveled to Riga to play what was supposed to be a support slot for fellow countrymen Supersilent. However, Supersilent canceled on the day but Dausteg went ahead at a different venue than planned. This Dausteg, which was themed on Animism Vs Artificial Intelligence, took place at Riga’s fantastic Dirty Deal Cafe venue. Grab it here Dausteg: Animism Vs A.I

Remix Flower Of Flesh And Blood..

Want to remix Flower Of Flesh And Blood? The last track from my ‘Let The Night Roar’ out on Ninja Tune late last year? The one that got good reviews? You know…. with the bassline and stuff?

OH … You Do? Excellent.

Check the link below for the mixer stems.

Upload your results and let me hear them, my email address can be found by using the subscribe to mailing list button over there on the top right.

PLEASE NOTE:

I think in retrospect (this an older file here remember) the stems may be a bit odd, as i recorded out the individual stems of my mixer’s channels… meaning some same sounds can be heard over to different files. Obviously this isn’t ideal so i will try and upload the logic file and bounced audio files too.

KING CANNIBAL SAYS…

I stumbled upon a nice bit of footage from SubDub Vs Sonic Warfare at Melkweg, Amsterdam from the end of last year. Also on the bill were The Bug with Flowdan, Iration Steppas, Headhunter, Youngsta, Jack Sparrow & Exodus.

Looking at things like this really remind me how luck i am to be able to do this sort of thing, let alone get paid for it too.

Let The Night Tour pt7 : Seattle

Next stop Seattle. With the tour close to drawing to an end, i’m surprised i haven’t grown weary of flights or experience a whole lot of burn out. Its been a wonderful experience so far, my only regret is not being able to stay longer in New York and some of the west coast cities. I’d happily have traded two days in Baltimore for two extra days browsing the racks at Kims.

The only two things i knew about Seattle are grunge and Fraiser, both showing very different parts of the city. Fraiser immediately sprung to mind as Space Needle loomed ominously over me outside of the hotel room.  One look through a copy of The Stranger a free local arts paper certainly showed me how much more liberal this city was, that liberal attitude also accounts for a lot of vagrants and beggars though, as like a lot of places they are not constantly moved on by the police.

I was in town to play for the Shift label at a venue names Contour. Whilst the promoters and people their were really friendly i had less fun at this gig than probably any other on my U.S run. Playing quite a mixed set currently ranging from my own material through party-ish dubstep, techno and then on to harder sounding dubstep, and drum & bass , i find different crowds really respond best to different parts of my sets. Sometimes they dig the hard stuff the most, sometimes my material… it does vary a lot, and i like it that way. I like a lot of different music and want to show case the sounds i listen to when making what I make. Of course i intend to make these really work for the dancefloor, but i like to show a broad sonic spectrum. Well this time none of it really seemed to stick, i’m not sure why and had a few people approach me afterwards for autographs who really enjoyed the set – it just didn’t seem to go down well with a lot of the crowd. Oh well, everyone has bad gigs, and sometimes i feel like the really amazing amazing nights where i feel like i really capture something only makes the average gigs seem a lot worse. The ironic thing was that technically it was a lot better performance than the Low End Theory one the previous night.

Let The Night Tour pt6 : In love with Low End, L.A

Early the next morning we headed back to the airport, the red velour upholstery cocooning us from the cold white snow outside. Reports from the travel agency indicating that our flight was still on time but the earlier flights being cancelled. In deed our flight made it out with only a little delay and upon arriving in L.A.X we found out our flight was featured on CNN as the last flight out before the whole airport was closed down. Still, we were in L.A now and it never seems to get cold their so no chance of snow – seems i’d at last escaped the storm. The white roads had now been replaced by a whole lot of less exciting grey concrete.

The city was even more sprawling than i’d imagined lacking in a central focal point like most others do. Like only homeless people do in L.A we walked over to a dinner for a quick lunchtime burger with Jeff and L.A Ninja publicist Leslie. No i do not have any spare change. After that we headed back to the hotel and i started prepping the set for that night at Low End Theory. I was only playing for 40 minutes that night due to the amount of artists playing. Gas Lamp Killer, DNTEL, MCNocando and plenty others that  i can’t think of right now.  I don’t think i’ve fallen in love with a party or scene as quickly as i did with Low End Theory. I think our eyes truly met when after setting up Daddy Kev handed me a roll of gaffa tape and told me to strap EVERYTHING down as it WILL move. Having soundchecked already i certainly wasn’t in any doubt about that and talking to GLK later he told me he regularly has problems playing the room as the vibrations set off his midi triggers…. insane. Soundsystem aside what really appeals to me is the social side of the party. Plenty of other artists were there just it hang out, talk and check out the guest acts. I certainly think this has really gone a long way to cementing the progressive scene in L.A for it is such a scene built on people doing their own thing and developing a different sound, more out of jazz and psych than the LFO sync’d generic wobblers that so many people are unfortunately pursuing. One thing this trip has certainly taught me is that dubstep an increasingly art-free genre – dubstep is as dubstep sadly does. The rules of the genre are already there and done, do we really need to cover the same ground time and time again?

That, and i hate vowel / formant filters more than ever.

Daddy Kev played a great host introducing me to a series of artists and friends and i’m happy to have had a chance to meet Flying Lotus and was bowel over by GLK’s friendly nature.  My appearance had gotten more press and interest than expected so i was happy to hear i had been bumped up to a headline slot and indeed ended up playing to a packed room. Whilst it wasn’t the best set i’ve ever played as the short running time had me jumping about my set a lot people responded amazingly well.  it was an honour to play at the event and its reputation really does precede it. LIke wise it was an honour to meet many other friendly faces from a multitude of social networking sites, and although i’ve only mentioned (name dropped?) names of icons like Steinski, Anti-Pop, Fly Lo i’ve really enjoyed meeting other people with whom i speak to on a regular basis in various parts of north America, its just their names won’t be familiar to you, so i’ve neglected mentioning them.
