cover

King Cannibal says..

Big news today Cannibal kids! The 12″ of Ghislain Poirier & MC Zulu’s Go Ballistic is finally out, after a small delay. Featuring a remix from myself designed with the dancefloor in mind the 12″ also features the original heavy party sounds of the original  verison, an incredibly bouncy Toddla T & Duckbeats remix and Tony-O version. “Mastered by Stu @ Metropolis”

24 10 2008

King Cannibal Says…

Head on over to Redbull Music Academy for a very interesting talk with Stuart Hawkes of Metropolis Studios. If you own any Metalheadz vinyl you’ll have doubtless seen the words ”Mastered by Stu @ Metropolis” scribed in to the run-out. Like all Redbull Academy you’ll been to be comfortably seated as its over an hour and twenty minutes long, but its a great look at the often misunderstood world of mastering…..

“For over two decades, Stuart has been at the forefront of vinyl mastering, coaxing the heaviest sounds out of the waxy format. The list of records that Stuart has mastered is like a who-is-who of pioneering electronic artists throughout the ‘90s, cropping up on labels like XL, Mute, Reinforced, Too Pure, Rough Trade, Mo’Wax, Alphabet Zoo, FFRR, Talkin’ Loud, Hospital, and Metalheadz. Making breaks sound crunchy over massive bass tones is one of Stuart’s stock in trades, but he can turn his hand to all types of music. Recently he has made sure such stellar and varied artists as Amy Winehouse, The Prodigy, Roni Size, Snow Patrol, and Super Furry Animals all sound as good on your iPod as they do down carnival or over your transistor radio. Ears like a hawk.”

Free Milanese

King Cannibal says…

Ahead of Milanese’s new Ep, Lockout, on Square Records (and anyone at Dissident early this month and testify what a killer the track featuring Ben Sharpa is) , he has upped another free track to his website. Here is what the man himself says about it….

“Just remembered i did this, we thought about putting it on 1up for warp in 04 but my computer ate all the sequence data so we left it, all i have left is this rough mixdown.”

Its a slice of arpeggiated 2 step-ism (file next to My Red Hot Car) called ”Magical Flying Hat” and to get it click here and go to the download section where you can find a few other free downloads. After you’ve done that then check out his myspace for some images of ludicrous trainers.

King Cannibal top ten..

23 10 2008

Limewax – One Of Them (Current Value Remix) – Lost Soul Recordings

My two favourite producers going head to head, a twisting turning Unique 3 sampling, screwed up force of nature, Current Value’s live sounding rock drums are to die for.

Raiden & Current Value – RM Bleeps – Off Key Recordings

Current Value again on the hook up this time flexing his techno flavours. The pick of Raiden presents.. The Firm LP. “When you absolutely, positively have to kill every motherfucker in the room, accept no substitute.”

Randomer – Jobless – Med School Records

Hospital Records exciting offshoot is really hotting up, file next to a certain track called Aragami Style. Oh Suave finger clicks how i love you, (thanks to Triton’s drum banks for making them a common thing to hear again) and coupled with elastic basslines that stretch from here to the end of capitalism this track HAS the funk.

Theo Parrish – Love Triumphant – Sound Signature

Ahh, some proper proper detroit music, organic warm sounds with being driven home with such a sense of joy. I know i’ll never fit this in to a set, but its not important i just need to own this one for my own sake and piece of mind, which is something i find rarely said about contemporary dance music.

Quantec – Ray Of Hope (A Made Up Sound Rmx) – Echocord

The dubstep and detroit crossover continues. I rarely pick up Echocord releases as there seems a new 12″ every other week, but this one is something special. A fairy subtle Made Up Sound (AKA 2562) rework, but proof be you don’t have to tear down a whole track in order to provide a great remix.

30Hz – Me, Crazy – Lot49

Like a lot of people, i’m sure, it was seeing the words “Pinch Remix” on the flip of this 12″ that initially got my attention but it didn’t keep it for long. Some tearing monster mid range saturation with a great ascending hook.

Bjork Vs Modeselektor – Dull Flame Of Desire Remixes – White Label

It took me a while to get into i have to admit, but i lay the blame on Anthony Hegarty’s (Anthony and The Johnsons) voice. It just does things to me, bad things. Two really great remixes though and i’m going to pick the girls version,as there is enough testosterone in this list already.

Broken Note – War In The Making – Ruff / Peace Off

Taken from a  split 12″ with man of the moment Starkey. Dubstep seems to be somewhat of a 3 way split at the moment and (to my ears) half step is getting left somewhat behind in terms of progression, A quick glance at Chemical Records would tell you that, so many records so little distinction. If you’re going to do half step darkness you really have to go for it, and boy…. Broken Note are killing it right now, nothing even comes close now that Vex’d are, well …NOT. Just signed up to Ad Noiseam, expect great things from them and great things over a variety of genres too – check out their other current release ‘Fueling The Fire EP’ for some Freak Family style drum & bass.

Hive – Neo Remix – Violence

I don’t know how old this is, but its fresh out on Violence’s Salvation compilation and buries the OTT booming orchestration of the original for some stripped down bassline action. Love all the little bass drop outs. I hear this is yet another version of Neo too, and that Keaton (also featuring on the compilation)  has turned his attention to house music. See, it is possible to learn stuff from DOA.

Instra:mental & Nico – Horse – Exit Recordings

Nico and Instra:mental together, a great pairing much like your classic Shaw Brother’s wise master to Gordon Lui’s eager student. Damage, delicate delicate damage that takes you apart piece by piece. Spook city.

Daphne Oram : A life in pictures

She also produced some great work in her time.

Spykidelic Says…

I joined NIC (trust me, it’s better you get the acronym than the full title), an Oslo based band that features ex Swans/Prong drummer Ted Parsons earlier this year. The result of which has been the exit of one member and an almost completely different sound from their previous output. Justin Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu/Techno Animal) has almost completed production/mixing on our new album Voldsløkka. If you’re anywhere near Oslo on 29/10 we’ll be premiering 3 new tracks from it live, supporting mighty Hip Hop reformists Dalek at BLÅ. I’ll also be spinning some heavy platters.

In other news, the lovely people at Drowned in Sound wrote some nice things about my set at the ZXZW Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands.

I was fortunate enough to play before Ebola who ripped Tilburg a new asshole.

Lighters out…

17 10 2008

King Cannibal says…

Well here we go again, another month down and another monitor seems to have biten the dust. That’s the third lot this year, not including a torn sub. I really don’t take pride in breaking this stuff, i mean obviously i’m doing something very wrong somewhere down the line. lets hope DIGITAL VILLAGE come to the rescue and sort me out without too much fuss or months of waiting. I did like my Event ASP8s so hopefully this won’t be the end of them (they’re only 5 months old) as it looks like an electrical fault rather then blown internal amps or some such. Still… at least the last sounds it carried were good ones……

A little exclusive there, first peep on the new material for the album – so damn new its not much longer then the above clip. Lets call it THE UNTITLED for now.

Tuesday morning Tech Step

14 10 2008

King Cannibal Says….

The other day i took delivery of the new Instra:mental 10″ on Exit Records. This record is notable for 3 reasons.

First off is its collectable personalised nature : limited to 100 copies, the artwork and design has been created by Instra:mental themselves (all nice and diecut… as pictured above),they also come with two types of 10″ sticker sheets (500 of each) spread over the 1000 and tracks will never (legally) become available for sale or distribution in digital format, and are deleted on the day of release.

All of this attention to detail raises the second reason, it retails at a fairly whopping price of £14.99! Its steep for some cut out sleeve work, picture disc and stickers (drum and bass is rarely all about the stickers!) but its worth every penny as thirdly, it features techstep god Nico hooking up with Instra:mental (somewhat of his spiritual successors alongside Fanu) for the b side Horse. A brilliant slice of No U Turn throwback, its great to hear THOSE drums again (real drums you can reach out and grab hold of, not the overly layered plastic hear you hear all to often these days) and that ever evolving sense of shifting dread. I don’t really like to put other peoples audio on this blog so you’ll have to go and check it out here at Chemical Records.

Another one time No U Turn affiliate makes an appearance this week with DJ Trace’s Miles High getting the rework treatment on Dj Marky’s ‘Influences’ compilation out through BBE. Most people will have first encountered this track on Bukem’s classic Logical Progression Mix ( incorrectly labelled as After Hours, the b-side on the original 12″). As far as i know you can only pick this version up on the 3LP set sandwiched between wall to wall latin & disco.

Maybe i can tie this little post together by advising people to go back and see if they can find DJ Trace’s 21st & South b/w Nexus Apache a white coloured 10″ on Sm:)e Communications back from 97… a release as overlooked as it is good….VERY. No no, hang on, here is the only way of ending this post BY NO-U-TURN MP3s HERE – i didn’t even know they had  a download store.

Intua’s Beatmaker app for iPod Touch/iPhone

1 10 2008

DOUBLECLICK SAYS…
If you own an iPod Touch or an iPhone, and especially if you own one and enjoy making beats, I recommend this piece of sequencing software over anything else I’ve seen in the iTunes App Store.

It’s only version 1.02, but I’m already more than happy with it. WAV import/export, effects busses, bitcrusher, delay, eq, reverse, speed/pitch tuning, and even a waveform editor. I’ve been retiming breaks inside the machine very easily. Great for getting ideas down when you’re away from your music equipment, and even better for looking like a prick in cafés.

More information and video demos here

Many drum breaks.

1 10 2008

DOUBLECLICK SAYS…
I put these packs together for DogsOnAcid’s production forum The Grid originally. I’m now putting them here for any people who make tracks.

There are 9 packs, but there are ten downloads because pack 1 is huge (so it’s split into two parts, A and B). All are stereo 16-bit .WAV files from full quality sources.

I won’t put up a full list of all the breaks because there are 740 files in there and the list would be too long, but it’s a store of over 1.4GB of drum samples so you’re bound to find things you don’t know.

Find them at my Filefront page.
